The Ten Commandments
Day 8 - Questions for Reflection on the Fourth Commandment
Aug 4, 2005

"Remember the sabbath-day to keep it holy.  Six days shall you labor, and do all your work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your servant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy."  (Exodus 20: 8-11)

Commanded: Loving God, fully observing and delighting in the sabbath, His holy day, setting apart the entire day for the purpose of resting creatively, actively in Him; worshipping and serving Him, enjoying His Word and fellowship.

1.  Do you realize that your day of rest is more than a day of rest from everyday employment?  Do you realize that God has given you this day not only for your physical refreshment and benefit, but, moreover, for your spiritual benefit?  for your holiness? for the spiritual health and growth, not only of yourself but also your whole household?

2.  On His day how much time do you actually spend thinking about Him?  meditating upon what His Word teaches? considering the meaning of life and your goals in their relationship to His Will?  Do you meditate upon His works - His creation and His new creation?  on man's Fall and man's redemption?  Do you think upon His glorious Person - His holiness, justice, grace, mercy, and "hallow" His name?  Do you then praise him for all that He has done and for all that He is?

3.  When you gather together with your family or fellowship with Christian friends on His day, do you strive to talk about spiritual things only?   Are you inclined to profitably discuss the truths of teachings or do you teach His Word to your children?  Do you, with love, biblically instruct others who are weak in faith? who have problems?

4.  Since God as sovereign owns you and your time, He has every right to regulate your days and hours.  Is it difficult for your to realize this?  How is your mind occupied on His day? with fleeting resentments against persons or things? with worldly cares? again with that which interests you? Are you self-preoccupied?
