Day 6 - Questions for Reflection on the Third Commandment

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (Exodus 20:7)

Commanded:  Loving God, reverencing, fearing, and hallowing of His name, attributes, works, and everything whereby He makes himself known.

1. With your whole being do you profess His name?  Do you confess the name of His Son, who is God Himself, Christ, and Redeemer, as your Savior and also Lord?

2.  Do you seize the opportunity to sincerely praise, to hold high His name with all love and reverence? to thank Him for His goodness and mercy to you? to trust Him for His wisdom, power, and justice? to thank Him for His faithful, wise working out of all things for you? to honor Him for everything that He is and that He does?

3. Do you flippantly, purposelessly use God's name and perfections and/or His Son's name?  Do you verbalize His name to spice up your speech? to make it sound authoritative or impressive?  Are you using His name as you please? without thought?  Is swearing or profanity a habit that is difficult for you to break?

4. Do you realize that resentful feelings, inner grumblings and verbal complaints all take the name of God in vain?  Do you not know that God orders or permits all events or circumstances about which you complain or "murmur"?  Do you realize that when you murmur that life is harsh or unfair to you that you are complaining against God?  Is it difficult for you to see that when you murmur against God's providential dealings with you, you are doubting His perfections.
