The 2004 Strawberry Festival held in July was the 56th Chassell Strawberry Festival and ran from Friday evening through Saturday early afternoon.
A large crowd filled the township pavilion on on Friday evening to see lifelong Chassell resident Jim Belleville be named Citizen of the Year.
Samantha Rogers of Laurium was crowned strawberry queen. Rogers, a 17-year-old Calumet High School student, said she was asked by the Calumet Township Fire Department to participate.
15 other candidates also were in the running for queen. First runner-up was Cassie Kautto, of LíAnse. Shannon Marie Gerard was named second runner-up as well as being voted Miss Congeniality by the other contestants. Amber Linnea Leonard was named third runner up.
The Chassell Lions Club sold about 1,200 quarts of the luscious fruit over the two-day period. They sold out of servings of strawberry shortcake shortly before the eventís close Saturday afternoon. The Arts & Crafts displays, the BBQ and the Strawberry Shortcake are always special treats. Kid games and prizes are planned for Saturday after the parade.
